Description

Number 28, including the wall and railings, is a house located on Soutergate in Ulverston, dating from the early to mid-18th century and altered over time. The building is pebbledashed with a slate roof and features two storeys plus an attic, arranged in three irregular bays, with a plain painted eaves band. The windows are sash style, with plain reveals and projecting sills. The entrance door, situated to the right of the second bay, has a painted stone surround with a shallow cyma moulding and a stone cornice hood supported by shaped brackets. Access to the door is via four stone steps. Flanking the entrance are low stone walls topped with cast-iron railings designed in a Chinese Chippendale pattern. A chimney is located to the right of the building.

Inside, there is an oak dogleg stair against the rear wall that rises to the attic level, characteristic of early 18th-century design, featuring a closed string and turned balusters. The doors on the first floor consist of two raised and fielded panels, similar to the doors leading to the two rear rooms on the ground floor. The rear right-hand room includes a built-in cupboard with doors that feature ogee panels.
