Description

This building began as a Catholic church in 1823 and was later used as an Oddfellows Hall, now operating as a sale room. It is constructed of roughcast rubble with a slate roof. The building was built against the eastern gable wall of No.31 Fountain Street, and features a tower at its northern end. The north side of the building borders Tarn Side, with an embattled parapet topped with cast-iron crocketed pinnacles. The pointed windows have hoodmoulds and timber casements with Y-tracery. The south end has two bays: the right-hand bay is canted, and the left-hand bay contains a doorway. Above the doorway is a lintel with a hoodmould bearing the inscription 'ODDFELLOWS HALL'. The three-stage tower has pointed window openings, mostly blind, and an embattled parapet; the upper stage has paired blind openings. Inside, the building has a timber and plaster ribbed vault and a gallery at the north end with a front of raised and fielded panels, with trefoiled heads on the upper panels. A painted roll of honour on the west wall commemorates Oddfellows who died in the First World War.
