Description
9 Market Street is a three-storey terraced house, dating from the late 19th century. The front elevation is of painted roughcast with a slate roof featuring flat eaves and a short right-end stack. A prominent full-height canted bay window is situated to the left of centre. This bay window has late 19th-century plate glass sash windows, which extend the full height of the building to the ground floor. The bay is detailed with flattened angle column shafts and a top cornice. To the left of the bay is a doorway approached by three steps with renewed iron side rails. The doorcase includes a recessed door and overlight flanked by fluted pilasters, with moulded caps but no entablature, topped by an open pediment containing a segmental curved recess within the tympanum.
A rear range, visible from the rear court of number 7, extends to the north side. This range has a high roughcast gable, which incorporates a much smaller gable end from the 16th century, featuring a corbelled raised projection, likely part of a first-floor chimneybreast. Modern windows are set within the rear range, with one in the attic, one on the first floor, and two on the ground floor.
The interior has been altered, particularly on the ground floor, and appears to have been used as a shop. The upper floors were not inspected.
