Description

18 Market Street is a terraced house and shop built with painted stucco and a slate roof, featuring small modillions along the eaves cornice and a red brick chimney. The building has three storeys and a one-window range, highlighted by a central two-storey canted oriel window on the upper floors and a full-width shop front on the ground floor. The oriel window is adorned with large plate glass sash windows and moulded cornices at both levels, while the piers between the windows have thin sunk panels. The base of the building rests on the shopfront fascia.

The late Victorian shopfront includes pilasters at each end, with an arched panel over a raised lower panel. This is topped by an ornately carved large console bracket featuring acanthus leaf and flower details, which frames the ends of the fascia. Each pilaster supports a square block with carved decoration beneath a small urn on a pedestal, all crafted from timber. The shop window consists of two broad panes and a smaller pane to the right, which is canted into a recessed half-glazed broad door with an overlight. The entryway is enhanced with patterned tiles, and thin columns separate the panes and top lights, which have decorative patterned tracery applied in front of the glass. A mirror panel is located on the right side of the doorway. The downhill end of the building is slate-hung.

The interior of the ground floor has been altered and features a long through passage that extends from the front door to the rear.
