Description
Waterloo House is a three-storey, five-bay terraced house and shop, dating from the 18th century. It has a close-eaved slate gabled roof and three rendered chimney stacks located to the left and right, and to the right of centre. The front is rendered, with a raised plinth, sill bands, and long and short quoins to the upper floors on the left and right. Channelled piers define the outer angles of the ground floor. The upper floors have twelve-pane hornless sash windows. A 20th-century shop front is present on the ground floor of what was originally No. 2, and a 20th-century shop window is to the right of No. 4. The main house door is also 20th century, set within a doorcase featuring pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice. The shop windows have been altered in the 20th century with fascias and cornices; the shop window to the right has two large panes, with a renewed fascia and cornice.
The left end of the building originally had one opening per floor to the right, with twelve-pane horned sashes on the upper floors. A 20th-century single fixed pane window now occupies the lower level, replacing a shop window that was visible in photographs from the 1930s. Prior to approximately 1905, this section was clad in slate, which has since been removed.
