Description

The National Westminster Bank is a free-standing bank building with four bays and three stories, built on a large scale. It features a slate pyramid roof and rendered end chimneys on the left. A lead-clad dormer window on the roof has a 6-pane marginally glazed hornless sash window facing to the left. The building has a dentilled eaves cornice and painted stucco upper floors, with windows set in raised plain surrounds. There are corbels supporting the second-floor sills and a sill band at the first floor. The upper windows have six panes, while the larger first-floor sashes have four panes. The ground floor is made of Bath stone ashlar, complete with a cornice and a frieze inscribed with 'National Provincial Bank of England Founded AD 1833', although this inscription is partly obscured by a modern fascia. The ground floor also features pilasters, panels below the sills, and a vermiculated moulded plinth. There are three 20th-century fixed windows on the ground floor, along with double doors and an overlight to the right. The openings are adorned with quarter-round moulding, as are the panels beneath. Access to the doors is via two stone steps. The left and right end walls are stucco, with a window on the first and second floors of the right end.

The banking hall has been entirely altered with suspended ceilings, but shutters are still visible on the upper floors.
