Description
This is a house located at 52 East Street in Newton Abbot, dating from the early to mid 19th century. The building features painted roughcast walls and a 20th-century slate roof with bracketed eaves and rendered stacks on the front slope of the right gable end and the rear left. The house has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys tall with a three-window range.
On the first floor, there are three 6/6-pane sash windows, some of which contain crown glass, flanking a blind central window. On the ground floor, to the left, there is a passageway that is fronted by a plank door with diagonally crossed glazing bars and a tall overlight, leading to a house at the rear. There are steps leading up to a slightly right-of-centre six-panel door, which has a glazed centre and is topped with a three-pane overlight and narrow pilasters. To the right of the door is a late 19th-century shallow canted bay, which may have replaced a former shop window, featuring a 2/2-pane sash window on the front and a flat roof. A cast-iron gutter extends over the door, replacing a former cornice. Between the door and the passageway is another 6/6-pane sash window. The interior has not been inspected.
