Description
No. 53 East Street is a house dating from the 18th century, with some alterations made in the early 19th century. The exterior features painted stucco, likely over cob at the ground floor, and a slate roof with a rendered stack at the rear. Originally, the house had a single-depth two-room plan with a lateral stack at the rear, which was later extended.
The building is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window range. The front features a two-window arrangement with an additional window above the carriage entrance on the right. Notably, a coved eaves cornice is positioned unusually high above the first-floor windows, suggesting that the roof may have been raised. The first floor has 6/6-pane sash windows set in forward frames, equipped with flaps to hold the upper sashes instead of the typical counterweight-and-pulley system. On the ground floor, there are 8/8-pane sashes flanking a door that has six raised-and-fielded panels and an overlight, which is framed by pilasters featuring lozenge shapes in the frieze and a dentil cornice. To the right, the carriage arch has a shallow segmental arch supported by the upper part of pilasters with friezes and cornices. The interior has not been inspected.
