Description
The Dartmouth Inn is a public house located at 63 East Street in Newton Abbot. It was built in the late 17th century and remodelled in the early 19th century. The exterior features incised stucco, likely over a timber frame, and has a slate roof with a double-shafted rubblestone stack on the rear right and a brick stack on the rear left.
The building has a two-unit plan with two rear wings that have 19th-century gabled roofs. It is two storeys high and has a symmetrical two-window arrangement. The first floor has early 19th-century moulded frames for 8/8-pane sash windows, while the ground floor features similar frames for plate-glass sashes. There is a central door with a hood supported by brackets.
Inside, the left stack in the rear left corner of the wing has a slightly-arched oak lintel above an open fire. To the rear right of the main block, which uses the double-shafted stack, there is a 19th-century brick open fire. The former open fire backing onto it is now blocked and serves as a cupboard. Some beams on the right side are plastered over, and the roof was not visible during inspection. The inn is said to have been constructed in 1670.
