Description
Templer House is an office building for Newton Abbot Hospital, constructed in the mid-19th century. It features a stucco exterior and a slate roof, designed in an L-shape. The building is a single storey with a four-window range. Clasping pilasters at all corners have moulded tops and plinths, and there is a plinth with wide eaves and a continuous moulded impost band.
To the right, two gabled ranges step forward, featuring a blind oculus with a moulded architrave and four keystones above six-over-six pane sash windows that have radial glazing bars and Gibb's style blocking, possibly made of Coade stone. To the left, there are two six-over-six pane sash windows with stilted segmental arches. The pilasters of the central flat-roofed enclosed porch rise above a cornice and are flanked by a parapet wall. A slightly pedimented projecting hood on brackets, likely added in the late 19th or 20th century, is above the entrance. The segmental arch over the six-panel door features two rows of three vertical panels. The interior has not been inspected but is noted to have been altered, including the addition of suspended ceilings. Templer House was originally built as a detached boardroom block for the workhouse constructed between 1836 and 1839.
