Description
The pair of semi-detached houses at 25 and 26 Devon Square were built in the mid-19th century as part of a larger development commissioned by the Courtenay family, likely between 1840 and 1860 and designed by J.W. Rowell. The houses are constructed of painted stucco with a slate roof, featuring moulded stacks on the front ridge and gable ends. They are arranged as a double-depth, H-shaped plan.
The exterior presents a symmetrical appearance with a four-window facade and a 1:2:1 window arrangement. The outer ranges project forward, featuring plinths and moulded first-floor string courses, flanked by banded clasping pilasters. Eaves cornices to the returns form capitals to these pilasters, supporting open pediments at the front. Small plaster wreaths adorn the apexes, above the 3/3-pane sash windows with bracketed sills. These first-floor windows have eared and shouldered architraves, while the ground-floor windows have simpler architraves. The inner ranges have 2/2-pane sash windows. The returns incorporate entrances with semicircular fanlights and recessed semicircular-arched panels. Number 25 has a 20th-century door. Number 26 has a two-part entrance, with one doorway inserted against the party wall beneath a lean-to slate porch on brackets, likely dating to the late 19th century, and a matching half-glazed gabled porch to the return.
The interior of the property has not been inspected.
