Description

This is a mid-19th century drawing office, originally built to the rear of Newton Abbot Town Hall, located at No. 9 Devon Square. The building is constructed of painted stucco with a hipped slate roof. It is a single-story structure with a two-window front. A wide, plain eaves band curves down to meet the capitals of four moulded pilasters that articulate the facade. The three bays contain a central half-glazed four-panel door with a fanlight, flanked by two-over-two pane sash windows with horizontal glazing bars. The interior has been altered. A flight of ten granite steps leads up to the main entrance. A rubble stone wall, approximately one meter high, extends about fifteen meters to the left and twenty meters to the right, curving around to face Newton Abbot Town Hall. This wall is punctuated by Devon limestone piers with shallow pyramidal caps, plain cornices, and plinths, which flank a gate featuring an ornamental cast-iron top panel. It is believed that Isambard Kingdom Brunel may have used the drawing office.
