Description

Nos. 2 and 4 Devonshire Street, along with Nos. 69, 71, and 73 English Street, are commercial premises with offices above, built around 1854, although the ground floor has undergone alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed from calciferous sandstone ashlar and features sill bands and a stone bracketed eaves cornice. It has a hipped greenslate roof and retains original ridge brick chimney stacks, some of which have been reduced in height.

The structure stands three storeys tall on a corner site, with seven bays facing Devonshire Street and five bays on English Street, including a canted entrance bay at the corner. The ground floor is entirely modern, featuring various shop windows set between stone pilasters and topped by an overall cornice. The upper floors have sash windows, with some casements, set in stone reveals. The first floor windows are adorned with alternate segmental and triangular pediments, while the second floor features smaller windows. Both elevations display the same upper floor detailing. The interiors have not been inspected. A late 19th-century photograph of the building can be found in Perriam's 1988 publication.
