Description
This is a mid-19th century building of ashlar sandstone, located on John William Street. It was originally listed as numbers 70, 72, 72A, 74, 74A, 76, 76A and 78, and now comprises numbers 70 to 78 (even). The building has three storeys and features sandstone stacks with modillioned cornices, a modillioned eaves cornice, and continuous moulded sill bands. A moulded cornice sits above the ground floor. Rusticated quoins are present.
The ground floor has modern shop fronts, with the exception of the upper parts of number 70, which retain fancy glazing bars. Some shop fascias are separated by paired fluted consoles. Three bays at the north end and one bay at the south have segment-headed openings with a continuous moulded impost band and moulded voussoirs. Two of these openings contain sashes with recessed panels below, one has a modern door, and the final one has double doors with six moulded panels and a fanlight.
The first and second floors have six ranges of sashes in moulded surrounds, with the first-floor sashes featuring sills on fluted brackets, cornices, and triangular pediments on windows 3, 8, 11 and 15. The corners of the building are chamfered where it meets Brooke Street and Wood Street.
The Brooke Street elevation features ten ranges of sashes; the ground-floor sashes mirroring those on John William Street, and the first-floor sashes having moulded surrounds, while the second-floor sashes have plain surrounds.
