Description
Nos 1 and 3 Northumberland Street is a mid-19th century building constructed of ashlar with a hipped slate roof. It stands three storeys tall and features a modillion eaves cornice and a blocking course. The building has continuous moulded sill bands and the ground floor is horizontally rusticated. There are seven ranges of sash windows: the ground floor windows are round-arched, the first floor windows are in moulded surrounds with cornices (the end bays have Wilton frames and pediments), and the second floor windows are also in moulded surrounds with fielded panels flanking the end bays. The end bays project slightly forward, and the corners are canted with round-arched windows on the first floor in moulded frames, featuring fielded panels above. The ground floor of the end bays includes shop windows, with a modern window at the west end and a three-light window with arched heads and carved foliage in the spandrels at the east end. There is one return bay to John William Street, which mirrors the end bays on Northumberland Street. The area is enclosed with ornate cast iron railings.
