Description
The Wholesale Market for Fruit and Vegetables, built between 1887 and 1889, was designed by architect R S Drydale, who served as the Borough Surveyor. The ironwork was produced by the Whessoe Foundry Company of Darlington. The structure features cast iron walls and north lights that are fully glazed. It consists of six aisles, each supported by four giant iron columns adorned with elaborate foliate capitals. The girders display decorative patterns that have been pierced through. The market has hipped roofs supported by segment-shaped iron trusses, which also feature pierced decorative patterns. Glass canopies are held up by ornamental brackets with matching valences. Above these canopies, there are continuous round-arched lights arranged in two tiers, or three tiers where the ground slopes down towards the east. The frieze includes roundels and heraldic ornamentation.
