Description
Cardiff Central Market is a Grade II* listed building featuring a classical facade made of yellow brick and grey Forest of Dean ashlar. The facade consists of three equal-height bays, each adorned with stone pediments and pilasters. The central opening has an elliptical arch that encloses an upper wrought iron grille, which displays the date "1891," the inscription "Cardiff market," and the borough arms. The outer bays contain narrower arched windows with cast iron tracery. Above the facade, the iron and glass gable end of the main hall is visible. At the entrance on St Mary Street, there is a pair of elaborate wrought-iron gates beneath the archway of the Market buildings.
Inside, a triangular fish market features an iron-framed roof that leads to the main hall, which boasts a complex wrought-iron and steel glazed roof. The main hall is organized into eight bays supported by lattice-girder principals, with steel tie bars featuring scrolls at the centers and wrought-iron stanchions with decorative brackets. Each bay has arcaded glazing, and the bays originally enclosed three stalls, although some have been combined. There are fascia boards and a continuous gallery on iron pillars that articulate the stalls below, along with a wrought-iron parapet. Two sets of stairs at the east and west ends have iron parapets. Many stalls retain their original cast-iron numbers, and there is a two-storey market superintendent's office topped with a clock. Additionally, at the northwest corner on the ground floor, there is a cast-iron K6 type telephone kiosk.
