Description
The Market Buildings is a commercial block from the late 19th century, featuring five and six storeys with shops on the ground floor. It is constructed of yellow brick, adorned with extensive bathstone dressings that include relief carvings, and pink and grey granite shafts. The building is divided into three sections, highlighted by giant Corinthian pilasters topped with urns on the sides. The central section has four windows and is flanked by these pilasters, featuring an attic with four round-arched windows and a central pediment. There is a two-storey arch leading to the market entrance, which includes a phoenix motif, alongside bow windows supported by colonettes and a balustrade on the fourth floor.
The flanking blocks have dormers set behind a pierced iron screen and feature two groups of three windows on the third and fourth floors. The windows on the third floor have alternating segmental and triangular pediments, supported by granite shafts. Below this, there is a band of seven round-arched windows with pink granite shafts, above another band of seven square-headed windows with grey granite square shafts. The ground floor has modern shopfronts, which also extend into the arch where the first floor presents three bays, each featuring a tripartite window.
