Description

27 and 28 Market Place is an early 19th-century corner building that features a carefully designed curved frontage. It stands three stories tall, with a plain brick upper section and a stone ground floor, topped with a moulded wood cornice. The brick parapet at the ends and a lead-covered blocking course at the center have recently had their brickwork renewed.

The central part of the building has two square sash windows and a blocked central opening of similar size on the second floor, while the first floor boasts three tall sash windows. The ground floor consists of five bays, each containing a modern window with a marble stall riser below, separated by engaged Greek Doric columns with an entablature above. Double pilasters are positioned at each corner, and a former door in the right-hand bay has been removed.

The corner sections are highlighted by a narrow projection of plain brick with a cornice that breaks forward, featuring recesses with narrow arched panels on each floor, followed by slightly differing and projecting blocks. On the right side (No 28), there are two square sash windows on the second floor and two large sash windows in shallow arched recesses on the first floor. The ground floor has been converted into a shop, with a modern window on the right featuring glazing bars in the lower part, a doorway to the left with a pair of glazed modern double doors, and a wide rectangular fanlight above, matching the size of the upper windows.

On the left side, the treatment mirrors that of the right but features only one window on both upper floors, with the entablature of the central ground floor design extending across one original pilaster and one wide modern pilaster. This side has two bays, one modern window, and a modern eight-panelled door with a large rectangular fanlight above. The frieze is decorated with triglyphs over the columns and pilasters. All the listed buildings in Corn Market and Market Place form a group.
