Description
The Former Corn Exchange, dated 1864, is a significant two-storey stucco building located on the north side of Corn Market. It features three exposed fronts, each three bays wide and divided by composite pilasters, topped with a moulded entablature and a stuccoed plinth. A band runs between the first and ground floors. The north and south fronts previously had balustraded parapets and cornices, which have recently been replaced by a stuccoed parapet wall with capping, rising to about a quarter of the height of the tympanum on the east side.
The east front is distinguished by a central pediment, which is decorated in the tympanum with gilded designs of sheaves, a pitchfork, and a sickle. All fronts feature three-light windows on both storeys, with metal framed and casement windows on the upper floors, all set in panelled surrounds and with stuccoed panelling below the upper windows. A modern six-panel double door with a three-light rectangular fanlight is accessed by three steps at the centre of the east front; this doorway once had a balcony above it.
On the south side, extending from the western end, is a two-storey curved bay made of colourwashed brick, featuring modern two-light windows in three tiers with frosted glazing. Additionally, in the westernmost bay on the north side, the central part of a window has been replaced by a modern panelled door. The Former Corn Exchange is part of a group of listed buildings in Corn Market and Market Place.
