Description
21 Market Place is an early 19th-century building that stands three stories tall and is constructed of yellow stock brick. The building is slightly curved along its facade. It features a brick dentil cornice with a parapet and stone capping on the roof, which is covered with slate. The upper floors have five sash windows set in shallow reveals, with flat arches, intact glazing bars, and rubbed brick voussoirs.
On the ground floor, there is an entablature that spans two-thirds of the front, adorned with a delicate dentilled cornice and a corner pilaster at the southeast end. Below this, there is an attractive contemporary shop front with lights that have curved heads. However, to the northeast, the original entablature has been replaced with a modern boarded fascia, and a plate-glass shop front and doorway have been added.
This building is part of a group of listed buildings in Corn Market and Market Place.
