Description
25 and 26 Market Place is an early 18th-century building that stands three stories tall with an attic. It is constructed of painted brick and features a string course at the first-floor level, along with a moulded and dentilled brick cornice. The roof is partly covered with old tiles and has a hip at the eastern end. There are three hipped dormers, each with two-light casements; the left-hand dormer was formerly leaded, while the others have Yorkshire sashes.
The north-facing facade includes four sash windows with flush boxes and flat arches, all retaining their glazing bars, and the brickwork features painted rubbed brick voussoirs. The ground floor originally had 19th-century shop fronts, but it now has four small plate-glass windows with metal frames and two doorways with plate-glass doors, also framed in metal, set within reveals. A modern boarded fascia runs above these. There is one bay facing east with similar windows on the first and second floors, and large canted modern plate-glass shop windows that project forward on the ground floor.
Additionally, a small plain two-storey extension connects this building to the north-westernmost end of the former Corn Exchange. All the listed buildings in Corn Market and Market Place are part of a group.
