Description
The Dolphin Hotel, located at 9 Corn Market, is an early 19th-century building that stands three stories tall. It features a stucco exterior with a rusticated treatment on the ground floor. A raised string course at the first floor creates a base for four pilasters on the upper floors, which are topped with a moulded string course and a parapet. The second floor has three Yorkshire casement windows, while the first floor is distinguished by two semi-circular three-light bay windows flanking a narrow central glazed door. This door is topped with a rectangular fanlight that has a rectangular glazing pattern, leading out to a central curved balcony adorned with contemporary wrought iron rails decorated with cast lead rosettes.
On the ground floor, there are two modern windows to the west and a wide yard entrance to the east. An annex to the east is two stories high, constructed of colour-washed brick. The upper part of the annex has a parapet and stone coping, echoing the rusticated treatment of the main building's ground floor. The central portion of the upper part projects with curved corners and features a large two-light casement window with a Gothic glazing pattern set in a recessed brick arch, complete with a keystone that is ornamented with a gilt Dolphin. The ground floor of the annex includes two modern windows and a central door of later date.
The Dolphin Hotel is part of a group of listed buildings in Corn Market and Market Place.
