Description
The Star Hotel, located at 26 and 27 High Street, is a building that likely dates back to before 1800, with three lower storeys and a fourth storey added around 1830 to 1840. The exterior is stuccoed, featuring a rusticated ground floor. At the roof level, a ball moulded balustrade conceals the roof and displays a central Royal Arms in colour. Above the second floor, there is a small cornice and stringcourse. The first floor features a projecting balcony that spans the entire front, adorned with contemporary cast iron railings.
The upper floors contain eight windows, while the first floor has six windows, including a large three-light central window with a stuccoed fanlight set in a segmental arch, complete with a console keystone and a large stuccoed wavy star above it. The ground floor also has six windows, although some have had their glazing bars removed and others have been altered to casements. Flanking the central entrance are contemporary rainwater heads. The central entrance features a segmental arch with small moulded caps at its springing. The original doors are boarded and studded with large nails. To the left of the central arch, a stone inscription reads, "Coach to London (Sundays excepted) Alresford, Alton performs 10 hours."
