Description

The Dolphin Hotel, located at Nos 34 and 35 on High Street, is a building dating from around 1760 with an early 19th-century extension. The rear and yard contain some 16th-century structures, which are partially brick with stone mullioned windows and partially timber-framed with plaster infilling.

The main façade is a symmetrical block of three storeys and attics, featuring an early 19th-century north wing. The main section is constructed of red brick with a rusticated stuccoed ground floor and a tiled mansard roof, which includes five dormers. It has a stone-capped parapet and a moulded wooden cornice that runs around the heads of the bow windows and to a small central parapet. The ground floor features two large segmental two-storey bow windows on either side, with a central segmental arched opening leading to the yard. The two right-hand windows have been altered to create three arched windows with a secondary entrance. The upper floors include five windows and two three-light curved bow windows.

There is an early 19th-century balcony at the central first-floor window, adorned with good cast iron railings featuring an anthemion motif. The north wing is built of yellow brick with a painted brick ground floor, featuring a brick parapet with stone coping and a small moulded cornice at the second-floor level. It has two brick string courses between the ground and first floors and at the first-floor cill level, along with five sash windows that have painted stucco flat arches. The second-floor windows are all blocked.

Inside, the hotel dining room on the first floor has 18th-century features, including a pair of carved stone fireplaces in the style of Henry Cheere. The entrance hall also contains an 18th-century stone chimney piece in a similar style. There is an 18th-century staircase located at the rear and left of the dining room, which features mid-18th-century coved plaster ceilings that were formerly over other rooms.
