Description
The National Westminster Bank Ltd, located at 129 High Street, was built in 1867 by John Gibson in an Italionate style. The building features a narrow main frontage with three bays facing High Street and a long return elevation with seven bays on St Michael's Street. It is constructed from varied stonework that ranges from brown to white tints and consists of two storeys, attics, and a basement. The roof is concealed behind a raised parapet that includes a circular fretwork and a central dormer with a curved pediment above. There is a bracketed cornice and frieze, along with end rusticated quoins.
The first-floor windows are sashes with moulded architraves and elaborate panels beneath, while the ground floor windows are round-headed and feature keystones. The entrance to the building is round-headed and recessed, flanked by engaged Ionic columns that support an entablature hood on scroll brackets. Above this, there is a large sculptured coat of arms that incorporates statuary of female figures, lions, and swags. Inside, the entrance foyer boasts a round-arched coffered ceiling and massive composite columns.
