Description
Midland Bank Limited is a corner building constructed in 1900 by T. B. Whinney in the Neo-Baroque style. It is made of stone and features three bays on the High Street elevation and six bays on the Albion Place elevation, topped with a hipped slate roof. The building has dormers with curved pediments and tall Italianate-style chimney stacks. An elaborate balustrade adorns the High Street elevation, while two cupolas at the corners are supported by eight Doric columns, each topped with four pediments—one featuring a finial and the other a weathervane. Modillion cornices are present between the floors. The first-floor windows have Gibbs surrounds with blank shields above the keystones, and there is a curved pediment above the corner window. The ground floor is marked by four tall engaged Roman Doric columns and rusticated round-headed arches with grotesque masks on the keystones. The corner doorcase includes an oculus above and an open curved pediment supported by putti, along with a further elaborate blank shield above. The doorcase is finished with a cornice and console brackets.
