Description
The Cathedral Hotel, located at 1 Milford Street, is a 18th-century building that was altered in the 19th century. It stands four storeys tall and is constructed of red brick, featuring stone bands between the storeys and a stuccoed ground floor. The building has a moulded stone cornice and a brick parapet with dividing piers and stone coping. The front consists of nine bays, which were extended to the west in the early 19th century. The two right-hand bays project and are accented with chamfered stone quoins. In the third bay from the left, there are superimposed mid-19th century canted bays that extend through the height of the building, with a cornice carried over in wood. The two left-hand bays have recessed sash windows without glazing bars, while the other windows feature camber-headed architraves on the second and third floors and flat-headed designs on the first floor, supported by consoles at the sills. An elaborate 19th-century cast iron balcony is located between the canted bay and the two-bay projection on the first floor. The ground floor windows are sash windows, with one having an architrave, and there are full-length plate glass round-headed windows in the centre. The entrance shows remains of a pilaster frame, and the round-headed windows are articulated by later pilasters, topped with a moulded cornice. Inside, there is some 18th-century panelling. The Cathedral Hotel, along with Nos 11 to 17 (odd), forms a cohesive group.
