Description
No 8 Queen Street is a Grade II* listed building originally constructed in 1425 and known as John a Port's House. It was restored in 1950 and features three storeys with a timber frame and plaster infilling. The building has a double-gabled front with an oversailing second floor, showcasing original braced timber work, although much of the lower part of the front has been replaced. The roof is covered with old tiles. Each gable contains a three-light leaded casement window, while the first floor has a modern five-light casement and an original eight-light mullioned and transomed window on the right. The ground floor features a plain 19th-century shop front with two two-light windows, a central glazed door, and a six-panel house door to the left, all under a common fascia.
Inside, one room is notable for its 16th-century panelling, pilasters, and frieze decorated with abstract arabesques. The fireplace includes two allegorical figures and a primitive relief of the Sacrifice of Isaac in the overmantel. A late 18th-century staircase is also present.
Nos 5 to 21 Queen Street form a group with this building.
