Description

15 and 16 Queen Street are two buildings that were formerly part of the Plume of Feathers Inn, dating back to the 15th century with a front that features 18th century painted mathematical tiles on a timber frame structure. The buildings have a moulded band cornice and a plain parapet. On the second floor, there are two flush framed sash windows without glazing bars, while the first floor has two modern rectangular bay windows. The ground floor includes a modern shop and yard entry.

Above the west end of the street block, there is a notable 15th century four-bay roof structure with arched braces, collars, and tie beams, along with traces of the timber frame visible below. The rear wing on the north side of the yard faces south and features jettied upper floors with tile hanging, where the frame of the overhangs can be seen inside. There is a 15th century cusped headed doorway and two gables facing south, which are partly obscured. The fenestration is irregular and has been altered over time. The main structure is primarily from the 15th century, with an early 19th century extension to the east.

The eastern range of the yard runs north-south and has undergone significant alterations, featuring two small gables with leaded lights and an old tile roof. A notable rainwater head dated 1689 is also present. The rear wing on the south side of the yard is three storeys high with an overhang, and has modern sham timber framing covering the original open galleries. At the east end, there is a very fine and unusual open Jacobean staircase that leads from the yard to the former galleries.

Nos 5 to 21 Queen Street form a group with these buildings.
