Description
No 20 Queen Street is an early to mid-18th century building that stands three storeys tall and is constructed of red brick. It features a moulded brick string course above the first floor, a moulded dentil brick cornice, and a brick parapet with stone coping that sweeps up at the corners. The gable end has a slate roof.
The façade includes six segmental-headed windows with stucco keystones, although the glazing on the second floor has been altered. The first floor has six similar flat-arched windows that retain their glazing bars. The ground floor of No 19 has a modern shop front, while No 20 retains an early 19th-century shop window with eight panes by three panes, framed by pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice. To the left, there is a six-panel house door with a plain surround and a cornice that projects over a panelled reveal. To the right, there is a marginal glazed shop door with a similar frame.
At the rear of No 20, there is a three-storey red brick wing that contains a magnificent oak staircase with panelled dados, open string fluted balusters, and scrolled ends to the treads, along with quarter landings. The wing also features a very fine enriched plaster ceiling and a pilastered doorcase with a pediment. The first-floor drawing room, located in No 19, boasts original panelling and a plaster ceiling, along with a pilastered fireplace. The wing also includes two other completely panelled rooms.
Nos 5 to 21 Queen Street form a group.
