Description
The Ailesbury Arms Hotel is an early 19th-century building of three stories and an attic, situated on the south side of High Street. The exterior is stuccoed and painted, with a projecting plinth and moulded string courses at the springing of the ground floor windows, and at the first and second floor levels. Further detailing includes a moulded string, a plain frieze, and a moulded cornice, topped by a plain parapet and coping. The roof is a Mansard style, covered in slate, with six dormers.
The building has six windows on the upper floors, and four semi-circular headed windows on the ground floor. A six-panel door, with an arched head (a blocked fanlight above), is centrally located. The doorcase has been altered. A four-centred arched entry is located to the right, leading to a yard. A later 19th-century porch, featuring coupled columns, shelters the original door and one window on each side. A later extension is attached to the left. The hotel forms a group with numbers 1 to 12 (inclusive), the Town Hall, numbers 131 to 144 (inclusive), and the Midland Bank.
