Description
Hodge House is a large commercial building faced with Portland stone, designed in a classicising style with French details. It features decorative elements such as cartouches, garlands, and relief window aprons. The building stands six storeys tall, including an attic, and is topped by a square clock tower, all set on a grey plinth made of Forest of Dean stone.
The St Mary Street side has 11 bays, with seven of these featuring tripartite "Chicago" windows. The second and tenth bays have paired windows, while the narrow end bays have single windows. The building is crowned by a balustraded parapet with a central window that is stepped up. The top storey has cornices above the windows, and the central bay is advanced, featuring an open pediment and a grey stone entrance portal with an in antis treatment. The ground and first floors are channelled.
On the Guildhall Place side, there are three bays that match the front, including the attic, followed by a shallow splayed bay with a broad segmentally-arched doorway. There are also two bays without an attic and a slightly advanced one-window bay. The building has been modernised.
