Description
Elgin House is a large corner commercial building, formerly a hotel, constructed in pressed red brick with bathstone dressings. It stands five storeys tall plus an attic and features four bays facing St Mary Street. The outer bays of the attic are pedimented and have tripartite windows, while the centre has a dormer adorned with a swag and two paired windows. Each bay contains three windows, with the outer bays on the fourth floor showcasing round-arched windows set within a cambered arch. The second floor windows are highlighted by bathstone balustrades. On the first floor, the central area features groups of three arched windows framed in bathstone surrounds with red sandstone shafts, while the outer bays have shallow oriel windows with similar detailing. The ground floor has modern fronts for the Bank of Ireland and the Laurel & Hardy Dining Company, and the central doorway was obscured by boarding at the time of inspection. The building has a design similar to Golate, with a splayed corner bay and one additional bay, followed by a simple block of five storeys that includes three narrow windows on the upper floors and two broad windows on the ground floor.
