Description
The County Court Offices feature a rich, free classical design constructed in Portland Stone and date from the 19th century. The building has three main storeys topped with steep slate roofs, which include a small lantern and an octagonal cupola. The entrances are located in slightly advanced end bays that have separate roofs and a balustrade between them, which is interrupted by a pedimented panel displaying carved Royal Arms.
The end bays are adorned with open segmental pediments that include cartouches and columns surrounding windows that have shallow balconies with iron frontals. On the first floor, there are casement windows set within architraves that have blocking. The recessed doorways are accessed by steps and feature lugged architraves, a panel above, and panelled wooden doors.
The three central bays contain paired sash windows at the second floor level, while the first floor has three casement windows within architraves topped with open pediments that also enclose cartouches. The ground floor is distinguished by three elliptically arched windows, each with cartouches in the spandrels. The plain north return of the building is now exposed and constructed of red brick.
