Description
The Queen's & Royal Garage is a garage building dating from the early 20th century. It’s constructed from cast concrete on a steel frame, with internal brick dividing walls. The facade is painted, featuring exuberant moulded panels to the ornamental pediment, with brickwork cappings that are also painted. The segmental pediment has a raised central panel supporting a pedestal with a low relief depiction of a winged torch. Decorative lettering reading "CARWAYS AIRWAYS" is displayed on backgrounds depicting lightning, curving around a coach and aeroplane in low relief. Below, raised serif lettering spells out "THE QUEEN'S & ROYAL GARAGE." Plain fascia is present over the main piers, featuring banded capitals and incised rectilinear panels that nearly alternate to the centres and step up towards the middle of the facade. A black plinth includes a short section of the original handrail, incorporating an arched motif leading to the recessed forecourt and garage entrance. The left end retains its original fanlight, while the right end has a modern infill to create a taxi office. At the rear, the garage has a segmental trussed metal and glazed roof.
