Description

Edwards Garage is a garage dating from around 1898, possibly designed by Drake and Pizey. It is constructed of red brick with orange rubbed brick detailing and limestone dressings, with a roof that is not visible. The building follows a single-depth plan, and is built in an Edwardian Baroque style.

The single-storey, three-bay range has a symmetrical facade. This is marked by brick pilasters with ashlar plinths, banded stone and rubbed brick up to acanthus capitals. Wide, open segmental arches with alternating stone and rubbed brick voussoirs flank a narrow doorway set in ashlar. Above the doorway is an elaborate carved cartouche featuring rocaille, a cornice, and an oculus with brick and stone voussoirs, split key, and a gabled label. A full-width banded entablature, cornice, and parapet top the facade, with a large central segmental pediment using five moulded voussoirs. Ashlar dies rise above the pilasters, topped by four carved ball finials.

Inside, the garage features an open-plan showroom and garage space. This is a decorative early example of its building type, representing a very early example of the building type.
