Description
A pair of attached houses dating from around 1850, located on Pembroke Road, Clifton, Bristol. The houses are built of limestone ashlar, with a shared party wall and lateral ashlar stacks rising to a slate and concrete tile hipped roof. They are designed with a double-depth plan and are in the Italianate style.
Each house is two storeys high with an attic and basement, featuring a three-window front. The design incorporates square pavilions with attics and deep, overhanging eaves leading to pyramidal roofs. A recessed centre has banded detailing to the ground floor, along with sill bands, a frieze, and a cornice. The attic storey is also banded, with stone brackets supporting the front. A stone verandah in the centre is supported by square columns with wrought-iron spandrels, a frieze, and a balustrade with cast-iron sections. The first floor above the verandah is divided into four sections by pilasters, with the central pair projecting forward under a pediment. Single-storey porches are located on the left-hand house (with later extensions) and a flush doorcase on the right, the latter featuring paired pilasters, an entablature, and a semicircular-arched doorway with a two-panel door. Semicircular-arched windows have thin hoodmoulds. The pavilions have triple windows on the ground floor, paired windows above with a stone balcony, and triple flat-headed windows in the attic. Sash windows are present throughout, with horizontal glazing bars. A French window is located on the verandah.
The interior has not been inspected but is noted to have similar features to number 60 Pembroke Road. The architectural composition is described as βin its most genial and fastidious.β The houses form part of a group with numbers 60 and 62 Pembroke Road.
