Description

The Former Empire Cinema, located at 80 and 82 John William Street, is a two-storey building that opened in 1915. Designed in a classical style, it harmonizes with the architectural character of John William Street. The exterior is constructed of ashlar and features a modillioned and dentilled cornice, along with a parapet that is raised at the corner, adorned with a lion's mask ornament and a blind semi-circular lunette with rusticated voussoirs. The building has a canted corner that is slightly recessed in the middle, with horizontal rustication on either side. The entrance includes doors with glazing bars and is flanked by two fluted Ionic columns at the corner. Each elevation has six ranges of windows, also featuring glazing bars.
