Description
The Bank of Scotland, located at 31-33 High Street in Montrose, was designed by William Burn and built in 1839. This three-storey, seven-bay building features a classical style and is situated on a corner site. The front is constructed from sandstone ashlar, while the rear is made of squared and snecked stone. It has a base course, a band course above the ground floor, a cill cornice on the first and second floors, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course.
On the west elevation, the ground floor has been altered and partially re-faced in lined render. It features a central pilastered and corniced doorpiece, with windows to the left that have battered cills and windows to the right that include a narrow, blocked former doorway at the center, with lowered cills. The first and second floors are symmetrical with four bays, each having architraved margins.
The north elevation, facing John Street, has five bays with plain margins. The entrance is located to the left and features a single leaf, boldly panelled and studded door, topped with a rectangular 12-pane fanlight.
The east elevation is asymmetrical, with a gable end to the right and a piended section to the left. It is adjacent to a two-storey building at 4/6 John Street, which has a blank gable end above. There are windows between the floors in the center, and a bay to the left with windows on each floor, although the leftmost window on the second floor is blocked.
The south elevation adjoins 35 High Street. The building has timber sash and case windows, with 12-pane windows on the side rear and plate glass on the front and John Street at ground level. The roof is covered with grey slate and features stone skews to the south, an ashlar gablehead stack to the south, two ashlar stacks above the eaves to the north, one ridge stack on the north roof, and one ashlar stack to the south at the party wall with No 35. The stacks have polygonal cans and lead flashing at the blocking course.
Inside, the ground floor has been completely modernized, while the first floor contains office accommodation with decorative cornices in the principal rooms on the west side. There is a quarter turn staircase with landings and cast-iron banisters at the rear.
