Description
51 High Street in Montrose is a tenement building dating from around 1800. It is three stories tall with an attic and has a rectangular plan, featuring seven bays. The exterior is made of sandstone rubble, with parts harled and rendered, and has plain margins.
On the west elevation, there are modern shopfronts on the left and right sides at ground level, with a doorway in the center. The first floor has windows arranged in a pattern of three, one, and three, while the second floor has five windows. Above, there are five modern dormers centered on the roof.
The north elevation is adjacent to the buildings at 47 and 49 High Street. The south elevation features a gable end with ground floor scribed render, two openings that are part of a shopfront, and irregular window placement above, with three windows on the first floor, two on the second, and one in the center of the attic.
The east elevation is next to 3 New Wynd to the south. The first and second floors on the west side have 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while other windows have been replaced with plate glass. The roof is a grey slate mansard style, with two harled gablehead stacks on the north side and one on the south, along with a harled stack that breaks the pitch on the west side.
The interior of the upper floors was not seen in 1997.
