Description

Early 19th century probably incorporating 17th or 18th century fabric. 3-storey, 3-bay, rectangular plan tenement in 2 parts. Squared and snecked sandstone to front rubble stone to sides and rear. Band course between 1st and 2nd floors and below eaves cornice. Chamfered margins.

W (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: modern shopfront at ground, 1st and 2nd floors regularly fenestrated.

N ELEVATION: adjoining 43 High Street to W, extending E along close, irregular fenestration.

S ELEVATION: adjoining 51/53 High Street to W, extending E, irregular fenestration.

E ELEVATION: gable end.

Timber sash and case windows, 4-pane glazing. Grey slate, piended roof to front (W), pitch roof to rear (E).

INTERIOR: ground floor completely modernised, floor above shop at 1st removed to allow raised ceiling, 1st and 2nd floors gutted recent structural repairs made, evidence of early alterations, part brick internal walls, stone corbels at division of two sections, 18th century fielded panelling to rear possibly original or transferred from elsewhere in 19th century, unusual hinged sashes survive on S side.
