Description

47-49 High Street in Montrose is an early 19th century tenement, likely incorporating elements from the 17th or 18th century. It is a three-storey, three-bay building with a rectangular plan divided into two parts. The front is made of squared and snecked sandstone, while the sides and rear are constructed from rubble stone. There is a band course between the first and second floors and below the eaves cornice, with chamfered margins.

The west elevation features a modern shopfront at ground level, with regularly spaced windows on the first and second floors. The north elevation adjoins 43 High Street to the west and extends east along a close, displaying irregular fenestration. The south elevation adjoins 51/53 High Street to the west and also extends east, with irregular window placements. The east elevation is a gable end.

The building has timber sash and case windows with four-pane glazing. The front (west) has a grey slate, piended roof, while the rear (east) has a pitched roof.

Inside, the ground floor has been completely modernised. The floor above the shop on the first level has been removed to create a raised ceiling. The first and second floors have been gutted, with recent structural repairs made. There is evidence of early alterations, including part brick internal walls and stone corbels at the division of the two sections. The rear features 18th century fielded panelling, which may be original or transferred from elsewhere in the 19th century. Unusual hinged sashes are still present on the south side.
