Description

15 and 17 Lowther Street is an entrance to an arcade of two shops with offices above, built in 1904 for the Carlisle Old Brewery Company by Henry Higginson of Carlisle. The building is constructed of red brick with rusticated and alternate block quoins, all dressings made of calciferous sandstone, along with sill bands and a modillioned cornice. It features a Welsh slate mansard roof with boxed dormers and coped gables, as well as red brick end and ridge chimney stacks. The structure stands three and a half storeys tall and has three bays. A central flattened archway provides access to Lowther Arcade, with flanking 20th-century shop windows set within original rusticated pilasters that extend around the returns under the arch. The central bay showcases alternate block quoins, and all windows are tripartite with alternate-block columns. The window above the arch is bowed, and above it is a carved scrolled panel inscribed "LOWTHER ARCADE." The building also features a central open pediment with a keystone detail. The interior has not been inspected. Plans for this building, approved on 19 June 1903, can be found in the Cumbria County Record Office, and its style was intended to match the earlier Three Crowns Hotel in English Street, designed by the same architect.
