Description
The Newton Abbot War Memorial, built between 1920 and 1922, has been expanded after the Second World War and subsequent conflicts. It stands within a triangular garden plot and incorporates a stepped stone base and decorative wrought-iron railings.
The memorial is primarily constructed from Plymouth and Bath stone, with bronze plaques and a bronze standing figure of Victory, shown with outstretched arms and holding broken chains, positioned atop a Tuscan-style column. The square stone plinth bears bronze panels; the north face is inscribed ‘TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE MEN OF NEWTON ABBOT THEY DIED FOR FREEDOM AND HONOUR 1914 - 1918’. The other faces include the names of those who died during the First World War.
To the north of the plinth is a curved wall, approximately 1.5 metres high and 10 metres long, featuring a moulded plinth and a cornice with a low pediment. Bronze plaques are set into the wall; the central part is Roman-influenced and dedicated 'PRO PATRIA THESE TABLETS WERE ERECTED TO HONOUR AND RECORD THE NAMES OF THOSE WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE'. The wings of the wall display the names of civilians and servicemen who died between 1939 and 1945. Two additional stone tablets are situated in the gravel area in front of the curved wall: one commemorates a serviceman who died during the Korean Campaign, and the other honours those who died in service to their country since 1945.
The memorial is set on a stepped stone base and paved area, and the triangular garden is enclosed by a low stone plinth surmounted by decorative spearhead railings fixed to alternating wrought-iron and cream brick-and-carved-stone piers.
