Description

Numbers 37, 38, and 39 are a terrace of three houses built in the mid-19th century, located on the west side of Devon Square in Newton Abbot. The houses are stepped downhill from No. 37 to the left and feature painted stucco exteriors with slate roofs. Each house has rendered stacks on the right side, with No. 39 showcasing a moulded cornice. The buildings are two storeys high with basements, each having a two-window range. The ground floor of each house includes a tripartite window on the right and a 20th-century door on the left. They have moulded architraves, a first-floor sill band that continues to the returns, and bracketed sills supporting 2/2-pane sash windows with horns and horizontal glazing bars. The interiors were not inspected. Attached to the party wall of each house is a rendered wall that extends forward to a pair of gate piers approximately 1.5 meters high, featuring painted pyramidal caps. The gate pier for No. 37 is plain, while those for Nos. 38 and 39 have rock stone coping. The front walls are from the 20th century. Devon Square was developed for the Courtenays around 1840-1860, designed by JW Rowell, and these houses are a similar but more modest design compared to Nos. 1-8 in the same area.
