Description
A pair of semi-detached houses dating from the mid-19th century, located on Courtenay Park Road in Newton Abbot. The left-hand house, No. 21, is faced with incised stucco, while the right-hand house, No. 22, has a painted roughcast finish. The roofs are slate, with four diagonally-set, moulded shafts to stacks on the party wall, and three to the gable ends – the gable-end stacks are plain rendered. The architectural style is Jacobethan.
The houses have a paired L-plan layout, with later rear additions. The front elevation presents a symmetrical four-window range to the pair, creating a 1:2:1 fenestration pattern due to gabled centre bays. The projecting central wings feature elaborate Dutch gables with tall pyramidal finials and panelled pendants. Smaller gables, stepped forward to cover oriels, have ball finials. 20th-century windows are present at No. 22. The Dutch gables incorporate blind single-light windows, while the first floor has cross windows, and the ground floor has three-light transomed windows. Single-storey entrance bays are present, with crenellated parapets to the angles of the projecting wings. The interiors have not been inspected.
These houses are part of the Courtenay Park development, which was originally laid out in 1854, and share similarities with Nos. 19 and 20, being distinguishable by the use of shaped Jacobean-style gables.
