Description
This is a mid-19th century town hall, later altered and used as a bank in the early 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick with stucco detailing, and has a hipped roof covered in slate.
The building is roughly rectangular, with its main facade facing east. The south elevation, which fronts onto the Market Place, has two bays, with the left-hand bay projecting slightly. The corners of the upper floors are emphasised with stucco quoins. The ground floor features banded stucco above a plain stucco plinth, with string courses at window sill and header levels. Above each ground-floor window is a shallow, semi-circular arch, originally featuring a central keystone carved with a flower motif; these arches have been filled with stucco. The ground-floor windows have narrow glazing bars, arranged with a design of one larger pane flanked by two smaller panes, followed by six smaller panes above. A simple cornice is incorporated into the right-hand window opening above the panes. First-floor windows are of varying sizes; the left-hand window is smaller than the right and both have stucco decoration above with angled headers and a central keystone. The left-hand window has two small two-over-two sash windows separated by a central mullion, while the right-hand window contains a modern uPVC window with applied glazing bars. On the second floor are two small two-over-two windows on the left and a blind window with a sill on the right.
The east elevation, facing The Borough, is five bays and has a symmetrical design. As on the south elevation, the corners of the upper floors feature stucco quoins and the ground floor has banded stucco above a plain plinth. The left-hand bay contains the entrance door, set within a simple timber doorcase with an entablature. All the openings are topped with semi-circular arches, originally marked by a central keystone carved with a flower. First-floor windows are square-headed and are decorated with a stucco ornament including angled headers and a central keystone. All original windows have been replaced. The second floor of the east elevation has no windows but features five blind recesses extending to the eaves. Four pattress plates are fixed to the east elevation, three at ground level and one in line with the upper windows.
