Description
5 The Borough is a late 18th-century house that now operates as a restaurant on the ground floor. The building has undergone alterations in the mid- and late 20th century.
It is constructed of brick, with a rendered principal façade facing west, and features a slate roof. The main elevation is symmetrical, spanning three bays and three storeys. The central bay includes a Venetian window on the upper two floors, both of which are blind. Flanking this are sash windows on each floor, with the first-floor windows being late 20th-century sash style with six panes over six, and the second-floor windows being early 20th-century two-over-two sashes.
The ground-floor restaurant has a tiled frontage with a stepped cornice, dating from the mid-20th century. The central glazed double doors are flanked by large panes of glass from the late 20th century. At the rear, there is a single-storey projecting range with a tiled gable roof.
Inside, the ground floor is used as a restaurant, featuring finishes largely from the late 20th century, including an inserted ceiling and fixed bench seating. The rear of the ground floor extends eastward, providing additional dining space accessed through an arched opening and a small flight of stairs. This rear range also has late 20th-century finishes and modern ceiling joists, with a series of 20th-century casements with crown glass panes lining the south wall. A covered courtyard area to the south offers further seating. The upper floors have been converted into flats.
