Description
23 Castle Street is a house and shop built in the late 18th century to early 19th century. It is made of brick and has a slate roof. The building is rectangular in shape with two bays and its main front faces north.
The exterior has three storeys, featuring painted brick in Flemish bond. The upper two storeys each have two fixed casement windows with 16 panes, set beneath shallow stone segmental arches that include keystones. There is a brick chimney stack on the right-hand side (west) and a dentilled cornice under the eaves. The ground floor shopfront is a late 20th-century replacement with a wide fascia board, and the pilasters on either side have been modified but are remnants of an earlier 19th-century shopfront.
Inside, the ground floor shop has been modernised in the late 20th century and extends into a 20th-century extension at the rear. The upper storeys have been altered, with most original fittings removed. However, a 19th-century cast-iron fireplace remains in the first-floor room. The staircase, which features a newel-post and closed treads, also dates to the 19th century and includes turned posts with plain balusters.
