Description
3 The Borough is a late 18th-century house and shop that was altered in the early to mid-20th century. It is constructed of brick in a Flemish bond and has a slate roof.
The building is slender, measuring only one bay wide, and features three stories plus a basement, with its main elevation facing west. A single-storey 20th-century extension projects to the rear. The exterior includes a single six-over-six sash window with slender glazing bars on the first and second floors, located just to the left of the center. These windows have stone sills and flat arches above, each with keystones. The shopfront has been replaced at a later date.
Inside, the ground floor shop extends into the 20th-century single-storey extension, which has a large lantern. Access to the first-floor room is via a dog-leg stair, also a 20th-century replacement, and this room retains a late 18th-century fireplace at its northern end. There is an additional single-cell room on the second floor. The building also features a brick-vaulted basement with a small section of inbuilt shelving for storage.
